From small beginnings in a tiny factory in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, the company has grown rapidly and today, at its present factory complex, in excess of 200 staff are employed. The company is now the dominant supplier of frozen pie and pastry products in KwaZulu Natal. A branch has recently been opened in Johannesburg and is already making significant inroads into the Gauteng market.
Inside the modern, hygienic premises, state of the art equipment is used to produce meat pies (both baked and frozen unbaked) as well as sheeted puff pastry, samoosas, spring rolls and a range of pastry snacks. During the Christmas season, mince pies are manufactured. One of Ma Bakers major strengths is that it manufactures three different ranges of pies. As well as the traditional round pie, a larger oval pie is sold to cater for the larger appetite. Both pies are made in a microwavable aluminium foil base. For the more budget minded consumer, a range of fold over pies is made wrapped in delicious flaky puff pastry. All pies contain only top quality ingredients and only real meat is used. The company has its own butchery to ensure that only lean, gristle free meat is found in a Ma Baker pie. Ma Baker products are supplied to major retail chains, wholesale distributors, convenience stores, caterers and independent bakeries around the country. All Ma Baker products are certified Halaal by the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa.
